Independent production companies are trained to guard what they have from each other. One Bay Area actor-producer is building the opposite way — and it’s reshaping what her own company can do.
There’s a default assumption in independent film that other small production companies are rivals. Everyone is chasing overlapping crews, equipment, locations, and attention, so the instinct is to protect territory.
Chrissy Peterson is building on the opposite assumption.
An actor, producer, and emerging filmmaker working in the Bay Area, Peterson recently joined filmmaker Chris Hinton and Overdrive Studios as a producer — while keeping Silver Lining Productions, her own independent production company, fully intact as her own banner. Rather than treating independent production companies as competitors, she is interested in building collaborative relationships that allow filmmakers to share resources, perspectives, and opportunities while maintaining their own creative identities.
That last clause is the part that makes it work. This isn’t a merger, and neither company is absorbing the other. Two distinct creative identities, held separately, with the useful things shared between them.
What the collaboration has produced
The partnership isn’t theoretical. Peterson’s work with Hinton and Overdrive includes Marked, an independent film project on which she is involved as both an actor and a producer — the dual role that increasingly defines how she works.
Overdrive Studios, founded by Hinton, operates a full-service production facility in Brisbane, California. For Peterson it has become another creative home, and a place where she has expanded her understanding of physical production and the filmmaking process beyond performance.
That education matters to how she’s building. She approaches filmmaking from both sides of the camera, bringing an actor’s understanding of character and performance into her work as a producer, and becoming a stronger actor through understanding how films are built from the ground up. She is intentionally building a career that does not require choosing between being in front of the camera and behind it.
Her own banner, and what it stands for
Silver Lining Productions is Peterson’s independent company. Based in the Bay Area, it creates narrative-driven films with heart, purpose, and a distinctly female perspective.
Through it, she wants to make films with strong emotional perspectives, with a particular interest in complex female characters — stories that allow women to be messy, ambitious, flawed, funny, difficult, vulnerable, and fully human.
Her upcoming short film Female is in development through the company, being built with an eventual festival run in mind. It represents an important next step in her evolution as a filmmaker, and reflects the kind of work she wants Silver Lining to become known for: narrative storytelling with a distinct perspective, emotional honesty, and female characters who are allowed to exist beyond traditional archetypes.
Peterson also continues to act and collaborate with other independent filmmakers. Her projects include a leading role as Rose Davis in the upcoming feature Roan Creek and a role in Vox, both written and directed by Alyix Phillips; Marked, directed by Chris Hinton; and You, Me and Our Shadows, written and directed by Dom Scott.
The point of building this way
Peterson isn’t waiting for a traditional career path to unfold around her, and her ambition isn’t limited to her own opportunities.
She wants to help build an independent filmmaking community where talented people can make ambitious work together — particularly stories that give women the space to be complicated, imperfect, and deeply human. She believes some of the most exciting careers in independent film are built by people willing to create, collaborate, and take chances before anyone gives them permission.
Silver Lining Productions is an extension of that philosophy: create opportunities, champion meaningful stories, collaborate generously, and make films with a distinct point of view rather than waiting for permission to do so.
Read that way, the collaboration with Overdrive isn’t a detour from building her own company. It’s the method.
